Sky will be lent on to ensure that there is no charge for HD on PSB channels, ( what they do with other channels is up to them), remember that over half of households have satellite or cable on their main set. 3 Channels each from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5 would reduce the impact during said transition year (an a year long transition would be a lot faster than the 4 years of analogue switch off).įirstly any switch will not happen in an election year, by 2022 most households that presently rely on Freeview SD will have HD, the number using an SD PVR will be too low to take in to consideration. 2022 (when COM 7 and COM 8 are due to terminate) is a general election year so you know sure as hell any transition won't happen that year as it will be a vote loser for whoever supports in (by the time of analogue DSO the rough timing had been common knowledge for around 5 years.ĭoing all the COMs in, say 2023, with the PSBs getting a stay of execution is a way of speeding that transition up while reducing the howls of outrage. Turning it off is always a political solution as it will mean some people lose out, and the cheapest STBs from Argos don't really help too much - especially if you are already using an older PVR or similar - and an STB isn't something everyone can afford. Heck, with the number of HD variations ITV is "wasting" more money than the BBC currently (on DSAT). These aren't just being run like that because they are the cheapest. We still have MW, and FM, we still DVB-S MPEG2. ITV will certainly not want to waste money that way. and at least one of the two DVB-T PSBs" and not ". For that reason we may have to wait a few years for the switch to DVBT-2 to happen. Politicians are only interests in votes, not technology.Īny change to transmission systems used by the general public is always politically charged as you will see if you search back to posts on this site at the time of DSO. Switching off 405 line TV took ages for the same reason despite the fact that almost no one was watching it. In other words I'm looking at late 2022 / early 2023 for the conversion of all the COM mixes to DVB-T2 and at least one of the two DVB-T PSBs.Īny change to transmission systems used by the general public is always politically charged as you will see if you search back to posts on this site at the time of DSO. But on the other hand (from some posts on Digital Spy?) some people were avoiding DVB-T2 equipment because if its perceived association with HD which they considered not relevant for their needs and also DVB-T models often being cheaper than DVB-T2 models. In my opinion that 7 years may have been reduced slightly as some people were buying DVB-T2 capable equipment without any mandatory DVB-T2 specification for new freeview equipment. Back then I was hoping that the mandatory inclusion of DVB-T2 would be considered price viable by 2014, but 2014 came and went. Some years ago (2010/11? !) 7 years from the start of mandating DVB-T2 availability on all new freeview receivers was considering the length of time that take up of DVB-T2 receivers would have penetrated to a point were converting the DVB-T MUXes to DVB-T2 could be practical. The fact that they aren't saying much at present doesn't mean a thing. I'm sure that by 2022 we will see the start of a shift to DVB-T2 in order to accomodate the channels that have been displaced.
